Manatees’ class is one of our two year five classes. Mr Nunns is the class teacher, supported by Miss Benjamin and Mr Goodswen. Mrs Ahmed is part of our team this year, and is working towards her teaching qualification.
Our doors open at 8.50, though morning sessions begin at 9am and finish at 12.30. Afternoon sessions start at 1.15pm and end at 3.15. Throughout the morning children are predominantly taught English and maths. In the afternoons pupils will study a topic which cover subjects such as history, geography, music and art and these will usually change on a half-termly basis. At other times during the afternoon periods, children will also have separate lessons in French, ICT, RE and science.
Our year five children go for swimming lessons on a Wednesday morning, so it is important that children arrive promptly ready to set off immediately after registration. They also need to arrive with their swimming kit – trunks or a swimming costume, a towel and a swimming cap. PE sessions take place on a Friday, and all children will need to bring a PE kit – including trainers – to school ready for the lesson.
Maths and English homework is given out on Fridays and should be completed and returned by the following Tuesday. In addition, on each Monday year 5 are given a list of differentiated spellings to be learned before a test on the Friday. Children are expected to read at home each evening and should return their home reading record regularly to ensure they are monitored by the class teachers. Our library session takes place on Wednesday afternoons.
