Reading Friends

We are always happy to have new Reading Friends volunteers in school. Reading Friends is a scheme which helps improve not just a child’s reading skills, but also their confidence, self esteem and social skills. We run two 10 week programmes each term at Hillside – one for Key Stage 1 children and the other for Key Stage 2. Sessions last for one hour and each volunteer spends thirty minutes working 1-1 with each of their children.

At the end of the 10 weeks, parents are invited to a special Golden Assembly, where all the children who have taken part in Reading Friends, are presented with a book and a certificate.  Children taking part, have their reading level assessed before and after the programme and we find that most of them make significantly more progress than we would have expected if they had not participated. Some children have made over twelve months progress in only 10 weeks.

Our sessions take place on Monday afternoons, 1.00pm-2.00pm (KS1) and Tuesday afternoons, 2.15pm-3.15pm (KS2).

You will be required to have a DBS, but this will be done through school and will not cost you anything.

If you would like to become a Reading Friend volunteer, please speak to either Mrs Heywood, or Mrs Mellor in school. Training is run by an outside agency and takes place at the John Smith’s Stadium. This is free and should be booked direct, by calling Helen Littlewood on 01484 234153 or emailing helen.littlewood@kirklees.gov.uk .
